Agri Queen International University mourns the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Her death marked the end of an era in Bangladeshi politics, where she was a prominent and influential figure for several decades.

She rose to political prominence as the widow of Ziaur Rahman, a former President of Bangladesh and founder of the BNP. Following her husband’s assassination in 1981, she became a key leader of the BNP and eventually served as Prime Minister twice, from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006. Her leadership was characterized by efforts to promote economic development and national sovereignty, although her tenure was also marked by political controversies and legal challenges.
Throughout her life, Khaleda Zia played a vital role in shaping the political landscape of Bangladesh, often in rivalry with Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League. Despite facing legal issues and imprisonment in recent years, her influence remained significant until her passing.
Her death was mourned by supporters and political leaders across Bangladesh, recognizing her contributions to the country’s political history. Khaleda Zia’s legacy as a pioneering female leader and a central figure in Bangladesh’s political narrative continues to be remembered. On behalf of the Agri Queen International University Community (teachers, students, alumni, social activities) express our deepest condolences to her family, colleagues, admires and countless citizens.
